Just kind of as a fan, I've been taking Spanish lessons for several years. But I heard the song 'Gracias a la Vida,' and I knew that I had to record it for this."
Kacey credits the singer-songwriter of "Gracias a la Vida," Violeta Parra, a Chilean people singer and activist. "I think it's interesting that this song was on the last album she had written; she did commit suicide. I think that adds to the intense, tragic, and sorrowful nature of what this song is saying 'thank you' to life. You've given me so much. You've given me the beautiful and the terrible. You've given me the pain and the laughter. And I'm thankful for all of it."
The "Space Cowboy" songstress additionally adds that she has a lot of admire for the Spanish language and in the end desires to know enough to write down an entire track in Spanish.
